Repair Cafe NOLA is back at the Broadmoor Arts and Wellness Center!
This is a free event that happens around once a month. This time, its on 7/28. Got something that needs a repair, a tune-up, or just a little more love? bring it to the Repair Cafe! Find out more information in the facebook group here!

NOLA Comic Con... Which is actually in Kenner (bruh!)… Boy oh Boy, what is there to say about this event. Honestly, it’s kind of a crapshoot. This show is run by MightyCon, which I think is out of The Great Lakes area. In the past, the vendors who have come down have been really interesting to see. The local NOLA Ecosystem of collectibles can get really familiar show-after-show, and seeing some fresh stuff pumped into our area from another region is really neat. I think back to one guy who had half of his booth dedicated just to foreign-language editions of american comics. It was really cool seeing Spider-Man and The Flash in Iraqi and Spawn in French! Another fella usually vends with this group who has over 5 booth of old horror toys an ephemera, longboxes with no comic newer than 1985, and really strange but cool posters and even weirder model kits. No info on the site if this eclectic guy is going to appear at Mighty Con this year though. He didn’t show up last year, so I won’t be holding my breath.
Each year, this show has less value for the customer. What does $18 daily admission get you? Well last year while vending with my good friend SaleoSaurus, there were over 5 booths selling cheap metal signs, tumblers and shirts with stolen or blatant ai generated garbage just on our aisle alone! There were at least two different freeze-dried candy booths on the same side of the floor, but at least the two coffee vendors were spaced out evenly. The guests also seem to be made up of more and more local artists and writers, which they always seem to have a great time during the show, but I can’t recommend spending the cash at this show to see our home-grown talent when you attend their in-store signings for free, or go to a more substantial local convention and also see the hometown heroes.
So why do I even have this event on this newsletter? Well, for one reason, their flyer isn’t ai generated garbage! Another reason is because I vend it each year and sell a decent amount of comics. With this convention being in Kenner (bruh!), most of the attendees are not seen at any of the other local conventions. You know the type. Jefferson Parish Residents who would rather get a tooth pulled than venture over the parish line into New Orleans… Metairie families who have no issue taking an airplane to Disney World each year, but cannot seem to muster up the courage to drive 45 minutes across Lake Pontchartrain to attend any of the great conventions on the North Shore.
It really baffles my mind. Whenever I vend at this convention, I run into people I only see at this convention. They are super excited to have a nerd gathering nearby and are happy to spend a few dozen bucks on comics and action figures, but when I hand them a flyer for STCC in a few months and tell them all of the cool things that is just across the lake, they break into a nervous sweat and suddenly they hear their mother calling them.
So how would I improve this convention? I would evaluate the vendors applying. Limit the number of “crafty” vendors selling 3D Printed junk and jewlery or candy would be a good start. Heck, I’d even give a slightly discounted rate to some of the local collectors to set up. It would give the attendees more of an incentive to go if they know there will be great vendors out on the floor

    great documentary about an amazing band making a terrible album and the drama that happens along the way. Your mileage may vary depending on how much you like Metallica.

    not as fun the second time around. It’s okay. The best thing about the movie is the atmosphere.

    I did not like this. It felt more like a spoof than an homage to kung fu movies. Then again, I have only seen two kung fu movies, so I don’t think I’m the target audience.

• Iron Man 2 (rewatch for both)

    the first movie was dipping its toes into making a serious, high concept superhero movie. This movie dives into the deep end with more Iron Man, more fights, more villains, more music, more romance; just everything is cranked up to 11.

    remarkably similar to the first. Is iron man’s villain selection soooo limited that they had to have him fight another iron man suit two movies in a row? Dumb.

• Secret Mall Apartment

    The fact that they have all this footage in a time before cell phones is incredible. The combination of the things they were getting away with and the footage to back it up is really cool. The main guy can be kind of polarizing-on one hand he is a cult leader and on the other hand he is bringing joy to children in hospitals. I don’t think he is bad but I can see how he would rub people the wrong way.

    not good. If it was a different type of movie, the concept would’ve been better. I like the small town part of it. If they would’ve played it as an Iron Giant type of movie, a small town has a strange alien visitor who proves to be a hero, then I would have liked it more. I just don’t care for all the Asgard stuff

    so this movie is also bad, but it has Natalie Portman, which really makes it bearable. Nothing really happens in this film and yet I remember it fondly. I like that the archer dude is in this film but they don’t even say his name.

• Captain America: The First Avenger

    Amazing movie that will make you feel patriotic. The history, action, and Alan Silvestri score is incredible. Best MCU movie.

    the first half of the movie is Black Widow and Hawkeye and the second half is everyone else. The first half is just “why are we sitting through this exposition” and the second half is nonstop action, but I don’t know if it would be as good without the boring first part. Also, I don’t like Loki as a villain. He is just evil just because. Not enough motivation. His connection to the Chitauri is paper thin and if they were gonna have the mindless alien army fight the Avengers at the end, then what was the point of Loki being there? I think the MCU as a whole would’ve been better if they stopped at this movie and waited five years.

    WOW this movie is so bad. Trey warned me, but all the marvel movies sort of blended into a seamless mush of the best reblogged gifs on tumblr. Like I’ve seen the circle camera of them posing, Loki hitting that guy with a cane, etc., a million times. It makes you forget that the movie is painfully long and BORING. I feel like half the movie was just driving in tunnels.

    I really like this movie. I think it has merit beyond me knowing virtually the whole cast, but I will never have an unbiased take, since Trey is a lead.     The circumstances around this documentary are more interesting than the movie itself, but that doesn’t mean the movie is bad. In fact, it is pretty good. The movie presented like an educational film. Not a lot of shocking twists and turns like a modern documentary. Very impressive that in 1954 that they were able to record this whole documentary on film reels while sailing across the ocean. Good movie that inspires you to go out and have your own adventure.

    this movie is okay. Everyone is in this movie. I think other teen comedies of this era are better, like Juno and Superbad. I think the overhype and praise and accolades it gets now is overblown. The soundtrack has some unexpected hits.

    I think I missed out by not watching it during its heyday. I was expecting something more and it was not there. Some of the quips were funny. I was sold by the internet that this was some feminist manifesto and was left wanting.

• Juno

    Juno is the worst character in her own movie. The dialogue has too many “what the shiz” and “hell yeah homeslice”. It’s annoying. I still say Superbad is the most accurate portrayal of high school. Juno tries to do that but comes off as “how do you do, fellow kids?”

    I found the characters grating and annoying. The quipyness of Jennifer’s Body went with the campiness but I don’t think it worked out so well here. I liked that I didn’t know what would happen in the end. The end did make me cry, but I cry about babies all the time.

    Really great movie. Too long. The music and shots are really amazing. Good story and characters. Could’ve done without some of the flashbacks. We get it, he doesn’t think he could be a hero.

    I didn’t really care enough to rewatch this on my own, but it was so much fun to watch a second time!!!! It was so cool to see how everything is set up. We watched the cut ending and I think it would have been more impactful if they had it ending with him being caught by the police (but omitting the jail call). However, I do like that his friend saves him!

    very good! First full Burton film I really enjoyed. Gotham is so dark and grimy. I wish Vicki’s character was more fleshed out rather than being reduced to a damsel in distress. There are almost no women in it, so it feels extra gross that the only two women in it are so one dimensional.

I actually don’t have a lot of events popping up around me this time. I can’t tell if summer is just slow or what, but I was still able to find a few cool things for ya. I cannot stand seeing the wave of ai generated flyers and posters for events around here. It seems like every week I am being shown another band poster or event promo image that is very obviously “created” (and I use that term loosely) by ai. It’s especially bad with the local toy and comic books shows. I don’t know what it is, but it seems more and more nerd related events are using ai. We are collecting these cool figures and comics because we love the stories created by humans! It seems very disrespectful to the artists an writers to have crapGPT fart out a flyer with misspellings, the same overdone brush font, 3 legged Artoo units, and the pee-yellow color filter. If I were a professional working comic artist in “the biz”, I wouldn’t want to set up my table at any of these shows, since they obviously don’t give a rat’s hat about artists. To quote the character Skull from Monster house (2006) , seeing ai art makes me want to“throw up in some tinfoil and eat it!”

There isn’t anything I can really do to combat the wave of ai slop, other than just not attend those shows. As a part of that, I won’t be featuring any ai images on this event newsletter, so enjoy this slimmed down but even more curated list of events around the New Orleans area!

Mini Renaissance Fest is happening at Urban South Brewery on 6/20! “Shop a makers market, meet miniature farm animals from Rowdy Rascals Petting Zoo, take part in medieval games and challenges, and fill your bellies with turkey legs and ale!” This event is FREE to attend! Seems like it might be a cool thing to hang out at since the big renaissance fest in Hammond continues to use ai generated crap for their event promos and material. So whack!

The first Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day! On 5/2, head to literally any comic book store and there will be some neat comic books for you to take a look at, absolutely free! Most stores will have some cool sales going on as well for you to take advantage of.

The Capital City show is back again on 5/3. This is an interesting show with lots of vendors who don’t normally appear at the other events listed here. I always find something cool for my personal collection at this event. Check it out!

The New Pornographers are playing at the classic Dead Media Market venue Chelsea’s Live on 5/17! Not sure if I will be attending or not, but check out the Chelsea’s Live site here!

They cater to the vendors and collectors, and each year it gets bigger and better. They just announced that the co-creator or Rogue will be attending. Cool! The Toasters are kings of ska. If you grew up watching Nickelodeon from the ‘90s, you may remember the theme song for KaBlam! They have a bunch more music, and you can hear it on 5/22 at Santos Bar in New Orleans. Check it out and pick it up!

Very cool event at BSI on 2/28. They usually grab a few local guys and block off upstairs to hold a small marketplace. A great way to grab stuff out of the collections from other local collectors. The shop usually runs a storewide sale too!

December 6th is the next New Orleans Book Fair. I have been pretty dissatisfied with these whenever I go, although I do I like the idea. Not really a book fair in the traditional sense of the term. I think I will go to 1 more of these and give it another shot. Not sure where to fine more information, so i guess you’ll have to swing by the Free Store to check it out.

December 6th is also the day that this place Left Bank Vintage is holding a holiday Market. I have never heard of them before, but it seems to be higher-end vintage decor and furniture. Might be cool to take a gander if you are in the area. The Website on this flyer is still a work in progress, so check out their instagram I suppose @leftbank.vintage

Wasted Potency is putting together a toy drive featuring lots of local bands on 12.12 at Siberia on St. Claude. The entrance fee is a new, unopened toy or proof of a wishlist donation. Lots of cool acts and music happening! Hit up @wastedpotency on Instagram for more info.

Hidden Dimension Tattoo Studio is holding another Holiday Art Sale on 12.13! Guest vendors with cool toys, art, and a lot more. The last one that was held here was super cool. I am excited to see what’s up with this one. Get more info from the tattoo shop’s Facebook page Here

We rented many of these movies from the library. It has been a great resource with streaming platforms cracking down on password sharing. It was also lovely to see some good, old fashioned DVD menus with all the cute little easter eggs.
