• Metallica: Some Kind of Monster

    great documentary about an amazing band making a terrible album and the drama that happens along the way. Your mileage may vary depending on how much you like Metallica.

• Big Trouble in Little China

    not as fun the second time around. It’s okay. The best thing about the movie is the atmosphere.

    I did not like this. It felt more like a spoof than an homage to kung fu movies. Then again, I have only seen two kung fu movies, so I don’t think I’m the target audience.

• Iron Man 2 (rewatch for both)

  • Trey: 💥💥💥💥💥
    the first movie was dipping its toes into making a serious, high concept superhero movie. This movie dives into the deep end with more Iron Man, more fights, more villains, more music, more romance; just everything is cranked up to 11.

    remarkably similar to the first. Is iron man’s villain selection soooo limited that they had to have him fight another iron man suit two movies in a row? Dumb.

• Secret Mall Apartment

    The fact that they have all this footage in a time before cell phones is incredible. The combination of the things they were getting away with and the footage to back it up is really cool. The main guy can be kind of polarizing-on one hand he is a cult leader and on the other hand he is bringing joy to children in hospitals. I don’t think he is bad but I can see how he would rub people the wrong way.

• Thor

    not good. If it was a different type of movie, the concept would’ve been better. I like the small town part of it. If they would’ve played it as an Iron Giant type of movie, a small town has a strange alien visitor who proves to be a hero, then I would have liked it more. I just don’t care for all the Asgard stuff

    so this movie is also bad, but it has Natalie Portman, which really makes it bearable. Nothing really happens in this film and yet I remember it fondly. I like that the archer dude is in this film but they don’t even say his name.

• Captain America: The First Avenger

  • Trey: 💥💥💥💥💥(rewatch)

    Amazing movie that will make you feel patriotic. The history, action, and Alan Silvestri score is incredible. Best MCU movie.

    I saw this movie twenty years too late. It’s a movie where nothing happens.

    Growing up with constant Matrix parodies and references dulls the real thing.

• The Avengers (rewatch)

    the first half of the movie is Black Widow and Hawkeye and the second half is everyone else. The first half is just “why are we sitting through this exposition” and the second half is nonstop action, but I don’t know if it would be as good without the boring first part. Also, I don’t like Loki as a villain. He is just evil just because. Not enough motivation. His connection to the Chitauri is paper thin and if they were gonna have the mindless alien army fight the Avengers at the end, then what was the point of Loki being there? I think the MCU as a whole would’ve been better if they stopped at this movie and waited five years.

    WOW this movie is so bad. Trey warned me, but all the marvel movies sort of blended into a seamless mush of the best reblogged gifs on tumblr. Like I’ve seen the circle camera of them posing, Loki hitting that guy with a cane, etc., a million times. It makes you forget that the movie is painfully long and BORING. I feel like half the movie was just driving in tunnels.

    I really like this movie. I think it has merit beyond me knowing virtually the whole cast, but I will never have an unbiased take, since Trey is a lead. Fun to see where things were filmed around New Orleans (you can watch on Tubi or Youtube!!! and you should read the humorous reviews on letterboxd).

    The circumstances around this documentary are more interesting than the movie itself, but that doesn’t mean the movie is bad. In fact, it is pretty good. The movie presented like an educational film. Not a lot of shocking twists and turns like a modern documentary. Very impressive that in 1954 that they were able to record this whole documentary on film reels while sailing across the ocean. Good movie that inspires you to go out and have your own adventure.

• Jennifer’s Body

    this movie is okay. Everyone is in this movie. I think other teen comedies of this era are better, like Juno and Superbad. I think the overhype and praise and accolades it gets now is overblown. The soundtrack has some unexpected hits.

    I think I missed out by not watching it during its heyday. I was expecting something more and it was not there. Some of the quips were funny. I was sold by the internet that this was some feminist manifesto and was left wanting.

• Juno

    Juno is the worst character in her own movie. The dialogue has too many “what the shiz” and “hell yeah homeslice”. It’s annoying. I still say Superbad is the most accurate portrayal of high school. Juno tries to do that but comes off as “how do you do, fellow kids?”

    I found the characters grating and annoying. The quipyness of Jennifer’s Body went with the campiness but I don’t think it worked out so well here. I liked that I didn’t know what would happen in the end. The end did make me cry, but I cry about babies all the time.

• Project Hail Mary

    Really great movie. Too long. The music and shots are really amazing. Good story and characters. Could’ve done without some of the flashbacks. We get it, he doesn’t think he could be a hero.

    Very good, sooooooooooo long. Either should have been cut down or made into two movies. Nice to have something pure and hopeful in these times.

• Turning Red

• Get Out

    I don’t think it’s a horror movie but it is very suspenseful and thrilling. Every actor was really great in their role, except the main guy.

    I didn’t really care enough to rewatch this on my own, but it was so much fun to watch a second time!!!! It was so cool to see how everything is set up. We watched the cut ending and I think it would have been more impactful if they had it ending with him being caught by the police (but omitting the jail call). However, I do like that his friend saves him!

• Black Swan

    I think that Whiplash and The Substance capture the themes of this movie a lot better. The camera work and sound design were really good.

    white woman’s horror movie. Love the use of mirrors. and love Natalie Portman in general.

• Batman (1989)

    Music and environments, sets, costumes, all that is good. Batman is a side character in his own movie.

    very good! First full Burton film I really enjoyed. Gotham is so dark and grimy. I wish Vicki’s character was more fleshed out rather than being reduced to a damsel in distress. There are almost no women in it, so it feels extra gross that the only two women in it are so one dimensional.

• Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie

    I could talk about this all day long. The ten minute shorts about haunted board games and fighting Bugs Bunny have more heart and soul put into them than this “Hollywood movie”.
